The Speed Reading Book
INTRODUCTION:
The book I will review today is The Speed Reading Book by Tony Buzan published by BBC. This current edition is the 2003 edition. but 5 other editions were published before this edition. This book is mainly for people looking to increase their reading speed(undergrad and grad students) and retention after reading.
The author's foreword mainly includes that the author once used to read at a fairly average speed. Still, he became determined to increase his reading speed and then through vigorous exercises, he managed to increase his reading speed. This book is the work of 40 years of research he did on himself and it contains all the essential exercises for Speed Reading.
SUMMARY:
This book promises to bring your reading speed from a very low/low/average to a very fast reading speed and this book will also teach you how to retain excessive information in your brain. The background is short and precise as shared.
THESIS:
The goal of the book was to teach people the true meaning of reading really fast and how to retain maximum information while reading fast. The goal of the book was very clear as it was arranged in chapters and into 2 parts.
SUPPORTING ARGUMENTS:
The thesis is argued and supported because of the fact that the author is running a speed reading academy in which he teaches students how to read really fast and in this book he has written the success of his academy over time. The evidence is very convincing because he has given references to competitions and different newspapers and you can search for them on the Internet. The facts and techniques are accurate according to me, and relevant to the topic but they are a bit outdated as the techniques have now been modified but the principles regarding these techniques are the same.
SCOPE OF THE BOOK:
The major aspects and minor aspects of this subject have been covered with incredible detail and the attention to detail is magnificent. The author's initial approach was to compare and contrast traditional and modern methods and after that in each part the author became descriptive and he added a bit of chronology here and there. This book stands among the best books in its field even currently even after having been published quite some time ago.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
The author is uniquely qualified to write this book due to the above-given reasons. The author's intention in writing this book was to teach people how to read really fast and how to maintain the knowledge pathways going to their brains.
PROSE:
The tone was inspirational and informative as the author was trying to motivate us to do the given techniques in our everyday life and he was educating us on the advantages of speed reading. The text is organized in a logical fashion from little exercises to major techniques and this was done in a logical and applicable manner.
IMPACT OF THE STORY ON ME:
The book introduced the subject to me because before reading this book I used to think that reading was a natural process and everybody reads at their natural speeds but this book made me take a paradigm shift on the fact that reading I just a matter of using the right technique. The only limitation of this book is that the techniques are difficult to apply daily and when reading seems a bit far from reality. I absolutely agree with the author's thesis because he taught me how to increase my reading speed and after reading this book I retain knowledge a lot better.
